What Is Potion Play?
Potion play is a sensory activity where kids mix ingredients—like water, glitter, herbs, baking soda, or even little loose parts—into magical “potions.” It’s open-ended play at its finest: kids decide what to mix, how to combine, and what their potions do. Sometimes they’re creating a sparkly “friendship potion,” other times they’re brewing up a “witch’s laugh elixir.” Every time, it’s fueled by imagination.

Fizzy Ingredients for Potion – There are a few options when making a fizzy potion mix - you can simply use baking soda + vinegar OR you can use 1/2 cup citric acid + 1 cup baking soda + water. If you don't want to make your own you can buy our favorite pre-made potions from Little Lark.
Hello Sugarhouse Loose Gems ✨ – Our sparkly acrylic loose gems are the perfect potion ingredient. They shimmer in the water and look like magical crystals.

Our Favorite Halloween Twist 🎃
In October, we love turning our sensory table into a Potion Lab. We set out black cauldrons, orange and purple water, spooky loose parts, and of course, our glittery gems. The kids wear witch hats or aprons, and suddenly the kitchen turns into a magical workshop. They mix, stir, giggle, and play endlessly—sometimes alone, sometimes with siblings, sometimes with us joining in. It’s imaginative play, sensory fun, and seasonal tradition all in one.
Tips for Potion Play Success
